Iran before the Islamic Revolution 1979

I was struck by this short video clip of Iran (formerly the Persian Empire) before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The Ayatollah Khomeini brought in the worst aspects of Islam and look where they are now...

Iran may well not have "Hollywood style" nuclear weapons, but you can bet your life that it has enough shit to build a few (dozen) "dirty bombs" that can contaminate the Gulf/Strait and make it as useful as Cherbonyl or Fukushima.

What the fuck Israel has to do with this is beyond me, although you can try and "impress" everybody by throwing a few tenuous links in.

I'll start you off. Israel will NEVER use nuclear weapons in such an area for the very same reason a country like Iran would; too much (short term) wealth creation at risk.

I backpacker through Iran in 1976 visiting most of the main cites and general travel around. Can tell you at that time Iran was the most go ahead country in the entire Persian Gulf - way ahead of Dubai. Tehran was fine no issues at all (Skol Brewery/Canning operation & Green British double Decker air conditioned buses in Tehran) but I was not aware of any real atmosphere which clearly there must have been given outcome some 18 months later. I could not at the time of the revolution or since understand why countryman would wish to go back to a medieval level of values and give up on the progress the country had made. I had the privilege or returning two years ago. Tehran actually OK - however nowhere near the level I remember it at some 40+ odd years ago. They still have plenty of those Hillman 'Hunters' on the road though.

J.Riddle, with the oil you're right - a company bought the oil rights for the country in the early 20th century..at the time it was for a pittance, but also speculative, the oil had to be found in the main.

Turned out there was a lot of it!

The Saudis are shit scared that Iran will lob some nukes at the Strait of Hormuz, effectively cutting off much of their oil & gas from the western/civilised world.

Their involvement in Yemen is not purely down to a religious argument - they need access to a port on the Indian Ocean. If they can't take control if the Yemen, they'll just look a bit further north.

The thing is before the Shah there was a democratically elected government in Iran. The UK and US then overthrew it to leave us with the Shah's corrupt regime. That then led to the 1979 revolution. The democratic regime was not religious - but it was too left wing for the West. It's not as if the 1979 revolution came out of nowhere.

I'm also told by several Iranians that whilst those pre-1979 photos/video you see are representative of an elite minority in Tehran, the majority outside Tehran and who were not part of the elite were more conservative and the majority of women her hijabi.

Now you're left with a looney religious government where you have no choice but to wear what you're told or get locked up or worse.

Also, I would add that even though women need to cover their hair, society in general is much more open than certain (quite a few) parts of the Arab Middle East. For example, in Mashhad we were allowed to walk around the most of the Shrine of the 8th Imam (holiest site in Iran for the Shia), during prayers with men and women praying side-by-side. It was just the inner compound which we couldn't enter. Now compare that to Mecca, let alone the Kerbala itself

Yes, 99% of the key establishment politicians in Iran are wankers to a man (and yes, to a man - no women), but these days I struggle to think of anywhere where fewer than say 90% of key establishment politicians are wankers.

My father used to visit Iran roughly once a month through most of the 1970s, so pre-revolution. I visited back in 2007 for work (so post-revolution, obviously)

Basic problem under the Shah was that the elite did very nicely for themselves, but ordinary Iranians didn't benefit from the supposed "trickle down". In that sense, not too dissimilar to how the middle classes in Britain benefited in the short-term under the Tories and Blair-Brown during the 90s and 00s, whilst increasing numbers of working class Brits got left behind, especially post-global financial crisis. That created the opening that Khomeini was able to exploit, very similar to how Lenin played things in Russia

Uncannily similar in fact - and when I was in Iran, the system was very much similar to what I remembered from Cuba; bread was free of charge and centrally produced, so always stone cold in restaurants, for example. I went for an Indian meal with a friend's brother. The Keema Nan arrived in-between the starters and the mains and we were told we had to eat it as a dish on its own; if we used it as bread to mop up curry, then it counted as bread and they couldn't charge for it!

Most western businessmen in the 70s confined themselves to the hotels and chatted amongst themselves, with occasional chit-chat with the establishment. In those days my Dad spoke basic Farsi (in addition to fluent Arabic) and used to get down the market area quite frequently (as he felt more at home there than in the swanky hotels). He tried warning his bosses of what was coming, but no-one would listen.

I understand that my Dad left Tehran for the last time about 3 days before Khomeini returned and somewhere in Tehran there might still be a suitcase full of his clothes (my Dad's that is) - as he was there so often he kept several sets of clothes there.
(He also had a suitcase full of clothes in Beirut which in the end he never got to bring home)

To answer the question posed, Christianity as set out in the new testament is not comparable with modern Western society. As a Christian we have to strive to have the mindset of Jesus, please note I use the word strive.
The living Bible corrects, rebukes, changes and encourages us under the umbrella of love. Increasingly we are being shaped by the media, whereas a Christian should resist these things an be shaped by the Bible.
God is patient, and does not expect us to change overnight. The amount of money spent on outward appearance runs into billions of pounds, enough to solve poverty yet what we really require is cleansing.

I have just watched an interesting video online featuring Rifqa Bary that I feel is well worth watching.
I have met a number of Iranian,s who have converted to Christianity since moving from Iran to the West. One of which goes to the same Bible study group as myself.
They all have very interesting stories to tell.
